              FILM SCREENING
                  COLLECTED: Film Series
                Thursday, December 1, 2011
                  Song of Freedom
(70 min., 1936) may best represent the opportunity Paul Robeson was
looking for to "give a true picture of many aspects of the life of the
coloured man in the West. Hitherto on the screen, he has been
characterized or presented only as a comedy character. This film shows
him as a real man." Robeson was also given final cut approval on the
film, an unprecedented option at the time for an actor of any race. [more]   |

oral histories, and a marvelous CD of club recordings brilliant
enough for a stand-alone purchase. Sloane will talk generally about
cultural preservation and specifically about how and why she pursued
her passion documenting the African-American art form known as jazz. [more]                   |
