MIDTOWN TENANTS TO PRESENT PETITIONS AGAINST DEMOLITION OF MIDTOWN PARK APARTMENTS AT CITY HALL
SAN FRANCISCO, CAOn April 24th at 5:30pm, Midtown tenants and their supporters will gather at the steps of City Hall at 25 Carlton Goodlett Place (named after African American doctor and one-time Midtown tenant) to protest plans for the demolition and redevelopment of the Midtown Park Apartments and to present signatures from residents opposed to demolition.
In a public meeting with Midtown tenants, Mayor's Office of Housing Director Kate Hartley openly pledged that Midtown would not be demolished without majority tenant support.
The Midtown Tenants Association has collected signatures from Midtown residents expressing opposition to plans for demolition and redevelopment of the Midtown Park Apartments by Mercy Housing California and the Mayor’s Office of Housing. The signatures represent a majority of Midtown tenants in opposition to demolition.
For the past three years, Midtown tenants have organized a campaign for a return to tenant-self management, rent control and a transition to tenant equity ownership. The campaign has included petitions, demonstrations, legal actions and San Francisco’s longest-running rent strike.
Since then, tenants have gathered signatures to prove that Midtown tenants are opposed to demolition and redevelopment by property manager Mercy Housing.
