Project1VOICE's (P1V) One Day One Play staged reading event on the third Monday in June helps keep Black theater alive.  This year, over 45 theaters, museums and artistic organizations nationwide and abroad will stage a reading of FLYIN' WEST by Pearl Cleage.

Set in 1898 in the historic, all black town of Nicodemus, Kansas, FLYIN' WEST is the inspiring and powerful story of four courageous African American women pioneers who take advantage of The Homestead Act and travel West to build new lives for themselves and their families against tremendous odds. Fiction based on fact, this warm, humor filled family saga, illuminates the rich history of a group of black homesteaders and explores the unique and difficult challenges they faced. Their determination and hope to survive in a harsh and unforgiving new region are tested as they search for equality.

Aldo Billingslea, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre's (LHT) Interim Artistic Director, will direct LHT's reading on Monday, June 18th at 7:00 PM followed by a post-reception, silent auction and Meet N' Greet with the cast and director. All local proceeds and donations will help benefit the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre and support our 2018-2019 season.

Pearl Cleage speaking at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta.
Playwright Pearl Cleage is known for her feminist views particularly regarding her identity as an African American woman. FLYIN' WEST explores the universal themes of determination, feminism, pride and freedom.

Today, Nicodemus is the only remaining Western town settled by African Americans. At its peak, the town boasted a population of close to 800. At present, there are only 27 permanent residents. Yearly celebrations bring former residents back to unite with family and remember their town's all too unique heritage and the resolve it took for their founding mothers and fathers to piece together a vision of paradise.

Following its 1992 premiere in Atlanta at the Alliance Theatre, under the direction of Kenny Leon, FLYIN' WEST was the most produced new play in the country in 1994.
