Mrs. Verlie Mae Pickens, a long-time resident of San Francisco, California, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, September 22, 2021, surrounded with the love and care of her granddaughter, Ms. Charisse Anderson, in Los Angeles. Mrs. Pickens was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on June 11, 1916, the daughter of Mr. Thomas Alfred Nisby and Mrs. Lillian Lumpkin Nisby. She celebrated her 105th Birthday with her family at Disneyland this year.

A significant end to the week encompassing "Indigenous Peoples' Day" is the beginning of something new, San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company's (SFBATCO) two-day BIPOC themed "New Roots Theatre Festival." Presented at Brava Theater Center in the historic Mission District, October 16-17, 2021, it will consist of eight performances for theatre audiences to enjoy in adherence to San Francisco's Coronavirus safety protocols

Mayor London N. Breed and the Port of San Francisco today announced the return of cruises to and from San Francisco. The first vessel to call on the Port of San Francisco will be Majestic Princess on Monday, October 11, 2021. The Port is expecting 21 cruise calls through the remainder of 2021 and a record 127 calls in 2022.

This week, the City moved forward with Mayor London N. Breed’s proposal to acquire three new buildings for Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). Proposed before the Board of Supervisors and Budget and Finance Committee, the buildings will add 237 new PSH units, surpassing the fifty percent mark of Mayor Breed’s goal of creating 1,500 PSH units by July 2022. To date, the City has acquired 714 PSH units during Fiscal Year 2021-2022.

"Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year old immigrant from Thailand, was preparing to go on his early morning walk in the quiet Anza Vista neighborhood of San Francisco on Saturday, January 28, 2021. The Thai grandfather had just survived his heart surgery 9 months before, and his doctor told him to walk daily for his exercise. It was around 8:28 a.m. when Ratanapakdee, a short and thin man and nearly blind, suddenly got shoved hard into the sidewalk by 19-year old Antoine Watson. Watson was sitting in his BMW with his girlfriend; when he saw Ratanapakdee, he got out of his car, ran fast across the street and violently attacked the elderly Thai man." Mayor London N. Breed and the San Francisco Department of Public Health today announced the acquisition of two buildings that will house people living with mental health and substance use disorders as part of the City’s long-term plan to strengthen and expand access to behavioral health support. The two buildings, located on Florida Street in the Mission and Dore Street in the South of Market neighborhood, will be transformed into cooperative housing for twenty-six adults under the City’s Cooperative Living for Mental Health (CLMH) Program.

Mayor London N. Breed today appointed Assemblymember David Chiu to serve as the next San Francisco City Attorney. Chiu will succeed City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who served in that role since 2001 and will be the new General Manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
