SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 AT CITY HALL


WHO: Senator Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, Ann Cochrane, Executive Director, Burt Boltuch, Chairman, Board of Directors of the San Francisco Conservation Corps, Community Leaders, Business Leaders, and friends of the corps join in support of the corps.

WHAT: A reception and fundraiser honoring Senator Dianne Feinstein who helped found the San Francisco Conservation Corps in 1983 when she was Mayor.  The event is a 25th Anniversary celebration kickoff.
 
WHERE: San Francisco City Hall, South Light Court, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place

WHEN: September 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

WHY: The San Francisco Conservation Corps has been “Green” since its inception utilizing environmentally favorable programs to help youth at a time when “Green” was not a buzz word. For the past 25 years, The San Francisco Conservation Corps has turned the lives of “at risk youth” ages 18-26 into lives of promise and new beginnings.  Young people who have dropped out of school and who are on the verge of dropping out of society have built play structures for younger children, planted urban gardens, diverted millions of pounds of recyclables from landfills while receiving their GED certificate.  Corps members develop job and academic skills, leadership abilities and environmental awareness by completing outreach, conservation and community service projects throughout the city.

About San Francisco Conservation Corps-The first of its kind in the nation, the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is a non-profit job and academic training organization serving young people ages 18-26. Founded in 1983 by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein, the multi-program operation serves more than 250 youth and young adults annually. The SFCC offers young people opportunities to develop themselves, their academic abilities and marketable job skills while addressing environmental needs of the City through service work.

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
