SAN FRANCISCO CONSERVATION CORPS TO HONOR
SENATOR DIANNE FEINSTEIN AT 25th ANNIVERSARY KICKOFF

On September 4th, 5:30-7:30pm at City Hall, SFCC will celebrate
25 years of enhancing the lives of low-income youth and the City's environment
.

San Francisco. Before it was chic to "go green," the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) was created in 1983 with the leadership of then Mayor Dianne Feinstein and other visionaries who saw the connection between enhancing the environment and job training for low income young adults. SFCC will honor Senator Feinstein for her leadership in establishing the Corps. The reception will kick off the organization's 25th anniversary celebration, September 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the South Light Court at San Francisco City Hall.

"Thousands of lives have been changed and the environment has been improved through the work of volunteers, staff, and students," said Ann Cochrane, Executive Director, San Francisco Conservation Corps.  "We are delighted to honor Senator Feinstein join us as we kick off another 25 years of making a difference in the lives of young people who need our help."

Many of the young people who join SFCC live in some of the poorest communities in the City; they have dropped out of school and face significant barriers to achieve their academic and job goals. As Corps members, they work in teams to renovate play structures for younger children, plant urban gardens, and divert thousands of pounds of recyclables from landfills while earning their high school diplomas.  Corps members develop job and academic skills, leadership abilities and environmental awareness by completing outreach, conservation and community service projects throughout the city.

"We are celebrating one of the most significant goals a city can achieve-helping young people attain their goals and contribute to our community, all thanks to the vision of Senator Dianne Feinstein and other caring leaders," said Burt Boltuch, Chairman, San Francisco Conservation Corps Board of Directors.  "We invite the Bay Area to join us in honoring Senator Feinstein, supporting SFCC and adding to the great legacy of the Corps."

Corps member LaDontae Jones says "My dreams for the future are to take classes in engineering and I am also interested in solar panel work. If it weren't for the Corps I wouldn't have any of these skills or opportunities to be able to do the things I want to do for my future."

The September 4th celebration marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of SFCC's accomplishments. Tickets are $100.  For tickets, sponsorships and more information about the corps, visit www.sfcc.org <http://www.sfcc.org>  or call Claire McCabe at 415-929-7322 x306.
