Velma's One and Launches Music Mentoring Program

VELMA’S HOME OF THE SUNDAY BLUES AND JAZZ CLUB
FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY OCTOBER 4

                     Velma’s celebration launched “Velma’s Youth Music Mentoring Program.


WHO:    Velma Landers, owner and founder of Velma’s “Home of the Sunday Blues and Jazz Club, Mayor Gavin Newsom, “Gospel, Blues, and R&B pianist and vocalist Phenom,” Lady Bianca,  “the undisputed king of the juke joint blues, “Blues Boy Willie” and  “Deep Soul-Blues singer and guitarist” Johnny Rawls, and friends of Velma celebrate at Velma’s.


WHAT:    First Year Anniversary Celebration of Velma’s marked the one year anniversary and the launch of “Velma’s Youth Music Mentoring Program.”

WHERE:    Velma’s Home of the Sunday Blues and Jazz Club, 2246 Jerrold Avenue,
San Francisco, CA.

WHY:        Velma Landers has been instrumental in preserving the African American
art of Blues and Jazz for more than fifteen years.  The Bay Area Blues Society and The Jus Blues Music Foundation have honored Velma.  At various venues throughout the Bay Area, Velma has hosted Blues and Jazz artists.  Now Velma is celebrating a home for “Sunday Blues and Jazz Club” which has been instrumental in providing African American Blues and Jazz artists a place to perform and perfect old and new music.  Velma’s is launching one-on-one music mentoring opportunities for youth (Velma’s Youth Music Mentoring Program).  Additionally, Velma’s will host a special evening for various non-profits and organizations to raise funds on the last Wednesday of each month.

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
