The 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration entitled, "Sustaining the Dream: Through Community and Service", will be held on January 17, 2011, at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Yerba Buena Gardens.
There will be numerous activities as well as free admission to the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Museum of the African Diaspora, with special programs for children and teens, and discounts and free activities at area retailers and shops.

The commemorative march will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the march on Selma, Alabama, to be led by clerics and faith leaders under the direction of the San Francisco Interfaith Council. A short interfaith service will follow at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Waterfall, where the Rev. Dr. Amos C. Brown, a former student of Dr. King and national board member and president of the San Francisco Chapter of the NAACP, will be honored for a lifetime of service to the civil rights movement.

A special production presentation, "King in Five Vignettes", will be held in the Novellus Theater, featuring the Marcus Shelby Orchestra playing compositions from the new "Soul of the Movement" suite and a host of noted performers and inspirational speakers and leaders.

All-day activities include the Mind, Body and Soul Festival, with free health, preparedness, and sustainability services and activities for all ages, including a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross of the Bay Area. In addition, 2011 inaugurates the San Francisco Literary and Children's Reading Festival in partnership with Marcus Books, the nation's oldest African American book store. Special discussions and talks with leaders in literature, service, and politics will also be held throughout the day in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Screening Room.

Free and deep discounted transportation on BART (limited to 5,000 commemorative passes), SF MUNI, Golden Gate Transit and Ferries, the Capitol Corridor service, Central Valley AMTRAK service, and the Peninsula Caltrain Service (through the Dr. Martin Luther King Association of Santa Clara Valley, Inc.) are available.
