"TAKE BACK HIGH STREET BLOCK BY BLOCK"

MARCH, CLEAN UP & COMMUNITY OUTREACH

 

Community leaders, organizers and residents of High Street Say, "Together We're Cleaning Up, Reaching Out and Changing Our Neighborhood Hand in Hand."

 

WHO: Sponsored by the High Street Coalition, the Northern California Interreligious Conference (NCIC), Reverend Greggory L. Brown, President of NCIC Board of Directors, and Pastor of Miracles of Faith Community Church. Supported by Council members: Desley Brooks, Rebecca Kaplan, Libby Schaaf, Larry Reid, and Ignacio De La Fuente; Oakland City Auditor Courtney Ruby. Invited guest: Mayor Jean Quan.,

 

WHAT: "Take Back High Street Block by Block March, Cleanup & Community Outreach." Participants will march, perform outreach to neighbors, and clean up the street. "Take Back High Street Block by Block March, Clean Up & Community Outreach" is in alignment with Mayor Jean Quan's inaugural call to action to take back the streets of Oakland, block by block.

 

March participants will stop at the place where the first homicide of the year took place, for a moment of silence and prayer. 19 year-old Darnell Barr was pronounced dead in front of an apartment complex in the 3100 Block of High Street at 12:09 a.m. January 1, 2011.

 

WHEN: Sunday, January 23, 2011/Rain or Shine 

March, Neighborhood Clean Up, and

Community Outreach: 2:00-3:00 p.m.

 

3:00 p.m.-March Culminates with Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at Miracles of Faith Community Church

 

WHERE: High Street March will begin simultaneously at Brookdale Recreation Center, Brookdale Avenue @High Street and Walgreens @ Redding Avenue and High Street.

 

Participates may join at either location.

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
