Improvisational Quilting with Ed Johnetta Fowler-Miller

JANUARY 29/30: Join master quilter Ed Johnetta Fowler-Miller for a two-day Improvisational Quilting Workshop. Students will explore surface design and learn the improvisational method of piecing as they create collages using fabrics from around the globe. Wendel White and Dr. Leigh Raiford

FRIDAY, JANUARY 21: Join us for an evening of conversation between Wendel White and Dr. Leigh Raiford co-presented with the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). Wendel White is showing his Manifest project at CIIS, a collection of images that are representations of objects, documents, and images concerned with the issues of slavery and freedom for African Americans.  Dr. Raiford is Associate Professor of African American Studies at UC Berkeley. Her teaching and research interests include race, gender and visual culture with an emphasis on film and photography, race and racial formations of the United States; black feminism; memory studies; and black popular culture. Genealogy: Interviewing Techniques


SATURDAY, JANUARY 22: This second workshop in a series will help you determine whom to interview, how to get folks to open up to you, the best ways to deal with family secrets, how to record the interviews, and even ways to find relatives on Facebook. All of these workshops are useful to beginners as well as more advanced researchers. [more]

The exhibition unites two of the most well known and popular artistic forms in African American culture, jazz and quilts. Breed joined State Senator Scott Wiener to announce legislation to combat fencing, the sale of stolen goods on City streets. Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
