Randy Weston. From 5PM-6:30PM, Randy will be signing his new autobiography,
African Rhythms, in the JHC's Lush Life Gallery. At 8PM, Randy takes the stage at
Yoshi's with a special introduction from Smithsonian scholar
Anthony Brown. It will be a very special night with a true jazz legend. Please join us!*
As we honor one jazz legend tonight, we also say goodbye to another: my father,
F. Allen Smith, who passed away a few days ago. My dad was one of the true Fillmore
jazz greats. As this
obituary from yesterday's
SF Chronicle notes, my father, a trumpeter, was well-known to Bay Area jazz fans and was a fixture of the
West Coast jazz scene. We plan to honor my father in several ways over the coming weeks and months, so please stay tuned for more information soon.
