Textural Rhythms: Constructing the Jazz Tradition, Contemporary African American Quilts

THRU APRIL 24: The exhibition unites two of the most well known and popular artistic forms in African American culture, jazz and quilts. The exhibition includes work from some of America's best known African American quilters, Michael Cummings, Edjohnetta Miller, Tina Brewer, and Jim Smoote as well as quilts by top Bay Area quilters, Marion Coleman and Alice M. Beasley.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12: Robert Moses' Kin dancers Katherine wells and Brendan Barthel will perform a short excerpt from The Cinderella Principle (2010), followed by the PREMIERE of a new documentary film about Robert Moses' Kin by Bay Area filmmakers Giovanni Vaz del Bello and Maria Vaz. Join Robert Moses, the dancers and filmmakers for a lively discussion following the film.  [more]

Family History with Lisa Lee

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12: This workshop will discuss how and where to find vital records online and offline (birth, marriage, death and divorce records), the careful use of obituaries, working with remote resources, interlibrary loans, and how to find resources in libraries, archives, courthouses and genealogical/historical societies. Quilting in Process

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16: Quilting Demonstration by the African American Quilting Guild of Oakland. Quilters will be working in the MoAD Salon constructing quilts and answering questions from the public.

Additional Quilting in Process dates are Saturday, March 5th from 2-4 pm and Saturday, April 16th from 2-4pm. [more]

MoAD attracts over 500 at Textural Rhythms opener

Friday evening MoAD was "the" place to be, with over 500 people visiting throughout the evening at the opening reception of its new exhibition, Textural Rhythms. I'm not the "quilt" type of guy, and by now you're beginning to wonder because this is my 3rd post about the exhibition. But I must tell you, these quilts have really captured my interest. Steven Winn kicks off Black History Month with a comprehensive overview of the Museum of the African Diaspora, and he couldn't help but notice the big photo mural that looks out onto Mission Street through the museum building's glass facade. "It's very much MoAD's visual signature and has been since day one," Winn says, "as dominant an emblem as that of any museum in the city. [more]

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
