The Palo Alto Philharmonic presents an orchestral concert featuring a
prize-winning contemporary concerto as well as three beloved favorites from
the symphonic repertory.
The Philharmonic is proud to present French horn soloist Bernhard Scully in
a performance of the Concerto for Horn and Orchestra by
Composer-in-Residence Lee Actor. Mr. Scully is Principal Horn of the Saint
Paul Chamber Orchestra, and was previously one of the five members of the
world-famous Canadian Brass. He has been a soloist with many renowned
orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra,
and the Toronto Symphony. Mr. Actor's Concerto for Horn was awarded First
Prize at the 2007 International Horn Society Competition; this will be its
second performance in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The concert opens with L'Arlesienne Suite No. 1 by Georges Bizet, a work
that is as fresh today as when it was first performed in the 1870's. The
Philharmonic string section is featured in the romantic Serenade for Strings
by Edward Elgar. And as a finale, the entire orchestra plays Modest
Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, an exuberant work originally
composed as a suite for solo piano and later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel.
