May 5 Celebrate with SFCC and Community Partner SFO
SFO is proud to be one of three employers honored this year at the San Francisco Conservation Corps' (SFCC), annual - The Future. Hard at Work - evening reception. The reception, a tribute to 28 years of steadfast work on behalf of San Francisco's young people, will take place May 5, 2011, from 6:00p.m. - 8:30p.m. at the historic San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center's Green Room.
"The SFCC, I believe, is the most important program dealing with youth at risk in San Francisco," said Burt Boltuch, SFCC Board Chair. "It's the only program I know that is providing job training skills directly to the participants and providing educational opportunities."
SFO has worked with SFCC since the introduction of the Custodial Training Track in 2009/2010 as part of the SFO Career Connect Program. The objective of SFO Career Connect, a workforce development program, is to provide at-risk youth, ages 18-25, with a structured work environment where they are exposed to a variety of career options and gain marketable job skills. Applicants for the Career Connect Program are recruited through collaborative partnerships with participating community based organizations, such as SFCC. Career Connect includes work-training programs for intern placement into the private sector as well as a longer work training cycle for interns who desire to continue higher education. This year, the two SFO selected interns from SFCC are: Jamall Johnson and Kaprisha Bryant. They have excelled in the SFO Custodial Track, Career Connect Program, and are expected to complete their probation and become permanent employees.
SFO Career Connect conditionally qualifies its interns to participate in the 2708 Custodian, Airport-Only examination while they concurrently complete the 6-month City-sponsored Custodial certification course and 6 months of on-the-job work experience. Eight of this year's 12 interns successfully passed the Career Connect internship program and the 2708 Custodian, Airport-Only examination. This resulted in their permanent civil service appointment into Airport Custodian positions. At least three of the custodians will be working in Terminal 2.
