This free forum was part of the street celebration's Healthy Living Pavilion, which offered free hepatitis B screenings, blood pressure screenings hosted by Kaiser Permanente, lupus education hosted by the San Francisco Lupus Support Group, eye screenings hosted by Newman Lasik Rapid, HIV Tests hosted by the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, glucose tests hosted by North East Medical Services and whooping cough vaccinations hosted by CVS.

The Hep B Free team walked around the fair to raise awareness for hepatitis B. One in 10 Asian Americans is chronically infected with HBV versus one in 1,000 of the general population.

In honor of May, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, OCA and Nordstrom have partnered with Hep B Free to raise awareness about hepatitis B (HBV), the leading cause of liver cancer among APAs. Community Spotlight: North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit District

Tree planting is just one of the services that the NOM-TL CBD provides to enhance the Tenderloin district in San Francisco.

The North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit District is a community-serving nonprofit organization. Since 2006, the NOM-TL CBD has provided enhanced cleaning services and community building events in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Providing a clean and safe environment is the primary focus of the NOM-TLCBD. Through our service provider, San Francisco Clean City, we provide the following cleaning services: twice daily hand sweeping of sidewalks and gutters, soap and scrub down of sidewalks twice a month and sidewalk power washing once monthly. Additionally, we provide graffiti abatement, removal of hazardous waste, targeted steam cleaning of identified "hotspots", and collection of needles throughout the district. The NOMTLCBD strongly advocates for greater public bathroom access in the Tenderloin and partners with various city agencies to address the many challenges of the Tenderloin neighborhood.

Community building activities include annual street festivals, provision of small grants to community organizations, installation of public art, such as murals and banners, creation of a neighborhood restaurant guide, installation of public seating benches and regular tree plantings.

The NOMTLCBD is a core partner of two community-based safety programs: Safe Haven and Safe Passage. Safe Haven is a network of stores, agencies and organizations which have agreed to provide a person in distress with temporary shelter and a phone call if needed. The Safe Haven program started with a handful of sites and has grown to over 50 sites since 2008. Each site is marked with a neon green sign that features a Safe Haven logo. The Safe Passage program is a collaborative effort that seeks to create safe passage routes where children and seniors can walk safely to and from their activities. The routes will be visually designated with an artistic design and monitored by volunteers and local police officers.

The NOMTLCBD believes that a clean and safe environment, strong community partnerships and close collaboration with city agencies will create positive change in the Tenderloin neighborhood.

I began volunteering for the AHSC because:

I wanted to get more involved within the API community. I was already looking for more design projects to work on at the time, and when a friend approached me to redesign the AHSC site, I was super excited to contribute.
