Hearings on California Nukes
July 6, 2011

PLEASE ATTEND IMPORTANT HEARINGS ON CALIFORNIA NUKES

THURSDAY, July 7th 10 am - Diablo Canyon hearing; 2 pm San Onofre hearing

California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), 505 Van Ness Ave.@ McAllister, San Francisco (kitty-korner from SF City Hall). Hearing rooms are on the first floor, East side of building - on your right as you enter the courtyard.

10 am, July 7th - Evidentiary Hearings on Diablo Canyon license renewal.

In this case, PG&E seeks CPUC authorization to charge ratepayers for PG&E to apply to the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend Diablo's operating license for another 20 years (past 2024-25). PG&E has proposed suspending this application while seismic studies are completed and independently reviewed; San Luis Obispo's Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility will argue for dismissing it. CPUC posts documents in this case at http://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/published/proceedings/A1001022.htm

2 PM July 7th - Prehearing conference on San Onofre seismic studies.

(Note: New parties may sign up to represent ratepayers at this hearing.) In this case, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric want CPUC authorization to charge ratepayers to study the potential impact of earthquakes and tsunamis on its beach-front nuclear power plant. See previous documents at: http://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/published/proceedings/A1104006.htm

In both cases, Women's Energy Matters recommends shutting down these nuclear power plants to reduce catastrophic risks, pending a complete review of all risks and costs of nuclear power in California. Note: NRC granted licenses for both Diablo and San Onofre while refusing to review the risks of earthquakes and tsunamis in emergency planning.

In a separate case at CPUC, Women's Energy Matters is asking CPUC to order utilities to quit using power from nuclear reactors, and replace those power supplies with energy efficiency and local renewables. See WEM's proposals at http://www.womensenergymatters.org/nuclear/2011-05-23AlternativeBundledProcurementPlan.html
CPUC posts documents in this case at http://docs.cpuc.ca.gov/published/proceedings/R1005006.htm

Sierra Club California and others will be on hand to support dismissal of PG&E's license renewal and for the state to find alternatives to replace nuclear power.
