2012 Everyday Hep B Heroes Calendars Now Available!
Hep B Heroes are amongst us and they are making a difference in the hepatitis B free movement in their daily lives. The
2nd annual Hep B Free Calendar entitled "Hep B Heroes" celebrates 12
such remarkable Asian Americans of Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Korean,
Japanese, and Vietnamese descent that are all raising public awareness
for Hepatitis B. Whether it's through their occupation, advocacy work,
or volunteering, each month features a different hero in their element
complete with cape or heroic B emblem, along with a personal quote on
what they are doing for the cause.
Some
of the heroes include California Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Fiona Ma
honorary spokesperson for the Hep B Free campaign, Congressman Mike
Honda, who has been working on several pieces of hepatitis legislation,
and ABC 7 anchor and reporter Alan Wang who has been using his access to
the media to inform the public about the disease.
Calendars
cost $10 each, plus $3 for shipping and handling. All proceeds will go
towards ending hepatitis B disease and liver cancer. To purchase a
calendar, contact Carrolyn Kubota at (415) 373-4003 or email: ckubota@awfoundation.com.

Parol Lantern Parade
It's
the time of the year again, when the community starts making their
parol lanterns and holiday decor to adorn their houses for the yuletide
season. In San Francisco, on Saturday, December 10, 2011, the community
will be holding the 9th Annual San Francisco Parol Lantern Festival - a
must-see event during the holiday season.
The
festival begins with a series of parol lantern-making workshops held at
the Bayanihan Community Center and are still going on. Parol workshops
are open to the public. The
parols made during these workshops are then displayed during our
anticipated parade & festival held in Yerba Buena Lane, Jessie
Square and St. Patrick's Church.
This
year, expect marchers from over 25 local organizations to gather for a
lively parade and festival which includes performances, community
presentations and the annual Tala Awards for the best parol lanterns.
This
year participating contingents who are vying for the Tala Awards are
expected to incorporate the theme - Pagasa/Hope - Bright Visions for our
Future - in the design of their parol lanterns and presentation in
conjunction with the unveiling of the SoMa Pilipinas, a Filipino Social
Heritage Special Use District in San Francisco.
Each
year, the SoMa community showcases the parol lantern - the
quintessential Filipino symbol of hope, blessings, luck, peace, and
light during the holiday season - and brightens the Jessie Square, Yerba
Buena Lane and Mission Street between 3rd and 4th Street.
WHEN
Saturday, December 10, 2011
5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
WHERE:
Parade will begin at Yerba Buena Lane and end in at Jessie Square and/or St. Patrick's Church in San Francisco.
