Song of Freedom (70 min., 1936) may best represent the opportunity Paul Robeson was looking for to "give a true picture of many aspects of the life of the coloured man in the West. Hitherto on the screen, he has been characterized or presented only as a comedy character. This film shows him as a real man." Robeson was also given final cut approval on the film, an unprecedented option at the time for an actor of any race. [more]

Keystone Korner: Portrait of a Jazz Club with Kathy Sloane

Photographer Kathy Sloane will show images from her extensive jazz archive and read from her new book, Keystone Korner: Portrait of a Jazz Club, comprised of more than 100 black and white photographs, a collage of oral histories, and a marvelous CD of club recordings brilliant enough for a stand-alone purchase. Sloane will talk generally about cultural preservation and specifically about how and why she pursued her passion documenting the African-American art form known as jazz. Lying Lips (Oscar Micheaux, 1939, 72 minutes) In this film a  sleuth investigates a murder so that his beautiful singer girlfriend is not framed for it. Micheaux often made these type of genre movies with musical performances inserted for additional entertainment. [more]

Breed joined State Senator Scott Wiener to announce legislation to combat fencing, the sale of stolen goods on City streets. Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
