San Francisco, December 27, 2011 - Five-time Grammy nominated percussionist and Latin Jazz recording artist, John Santos and the John Santos Sextet are performing at George's Nightclub at 842 4th Street in San Rafael, CA on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 9:00 p.m.

Five-time Grammy-nominated percussionist John Santos, and his stellar Sextet shed light on the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz, as well as its aesthetic characteristics pertaining to instrumentation, rhythm, interpretation and improvisation. The Sextet is composed of some of the finest, most creative musicians, composers and arrangers in the field. Their repertoire consists of exciting arrangements from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the US original compositions and arrangements of classics from Latin America and the US. Their first CD, "Papa Mambo", was released on John's Machete Records label in the Summer of 2007. Their second CD, "Perspectiva Fragmentada", was released in October, 2008.  It was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association (NY), and by Cubadisco (Cuban Grammys) as one of the top Latin Jazz releases of the year, and selected as one of the five top Latin Jazz CDs of 2008 by New York's All About Jazz magazine, among many honors Equally at home with a dance or concert repertoire, The John Santos Sextet presents a wide range of styles and rhythms for audiences of all ages.

John Santos is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music. Santos has performed, recorded and studied with masters such as Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Lazaro Ros, Armando Peraza, Eddie Palmieri, Max Roach, Carlos Santana Pete Escovedo and more. Born in San Francisco, California, November l, l955, he was raised in the Puerto Rican and Cape Verdean traditions of his family, surrounded by music. The fertile musical environment of the San Francisco Bay Area shaped his career in a unique way. His studies of Afro-Latin music have included several trips to New York, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil and Colombia. He's a prolific performer, composer, teacher, writer, radio programmer, and record/event producer whose career has spanned over 35 years!

John is widely respected as one of the top writers, teachers and historians in the field and was a member of the Latin Jazz Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Institution. He is currently part of the faculty at the Jazz School Institute (Berkeley, CA) and the College of San Mateo (CA). The San Francisco Bay Area community in which he still lives and works has presented him with numerous awards and honors for artistic excellence and social dedication. John Santos' continued passion for Latin Jazz and his ability to articulate that in his performance of the music helps continue the legacy and historic accuracy of the genre. John was voted "Best Latin Artist" in the "Best of the East Bay"2008 edition of the East Bay Express.

George's Nightclub opened on October 2nd, 2010 following a seven year absence from the Marin County and Bay Area nightclub scene. The opening night sold-out show has been followed by numerous other sold-out nights attended by audiences excited to attend shows at the brand new nightclub. The 5,200 square-foot venue has a plush 1940s supper club vibe accentuated by a piano-shaped stage, cabaret seating, luxurious VIP leather banquettes near the back bar, blue neon lighted George's signs on exposed raw red brick walls and an art deco marquee. George's is the 2011 Pacific Sun's Best of Marin win for Best Place for Dancing!
