Panelist
Joyce Gordon - Panelist
Backed by her studies at the California College of the Arts, a keen eye
for detail and aesthetic, and many years of selling art, Gordon opened
The Joyce Gordon Gallery in 2003. Since then she has hosted over 200
exhibitions, primarily focused on Oakland-based and Bay Area artists.
Her exhibits celebrate the unique creativity of our culturally rich and
diverse region. In addition, the Gallery provides creative and cultural
exchanges with artists nationally and internationally.
Sean San José - Panelist
San José is a critically acclaimed actor, writer, director and producer.
He is the Director of Theatre for Intersection for the Arts. In this
position he has shepherded scores of culturally specific, multi-cultural
and multi-disciplined works from their conception to production. Many
of these productions have received numerous awards, including; the Bay
Area Reporter Best of the Season, Cable Car Award, DramaLogue and Bay
Area Critics' Circle Award. He is also is co-founder of the award
winning Campo Santo Theatre Company.
Marcus Shelby - Panelist
Shelby is a celebrated bassist, composer, educator, director and
recording artist. He has composed works dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., Rosa Parks, the blow up in Richmond, as well as, given
creative interpretations to the standard jazz repertoire. He is
currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz
Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. This
background gives him an exceptional position to speak on the theme of
how the arts have been used to explore issues related to race.
