delves into the origins, evolution and relevance of Puerto Rican music,
encapsulating the folk and popular trends of this tiny yet highly

musical evolution from a socio-political perspective through audio
examples from his legendary collection, video clips and historical

Diane Fujino presents Japanese Americans and the Black Panther Party: Researching Asian American Activism, Writing Biography.
Fujino is the chair and professor of Asian American Studies at the
Unviersity of California, Santa Barbra, and she will discuss the process
that went into her latest book Samurai Among Panthers, the first
biography on the colorful and contradictory life of Richard Aoki, the
highest ranking non-Black member of the Black Panthers, and the
challenges of writing his biography. Fujino will also discuss her latest
research in Japanese American radical activism and the questions she

The Exodus. The Migration. The Stand.

This
exhibition is about the Black San Franciscans of yesteryear, their
departure, and the story of those who remain. According to the 2010
census, the African American population dropped to 3.9% which is
devastating to a community that once thrived in various neighborhoods of
San Francisco. Art will be used to interpret what this
decline in population means for a community and a city that prides
itself on its cultural diversity. [more]

At one time or another,
attitudes about race have presented many questions in American society.
AfroSolo has gathered visual artists who have made paintings,
sculptures, quilts, drawings and photographs that creatively capture
those "race questions" and put them on display for us. We
will showcase the works of eleven artists. The exhibition will showcase
these artists' individual responses to some of the influences that race
has on their lives as well as how race informs our interpretation of
history, heritage, and social codes of conduct. [more]
