The Jazz Heritage Center is proud to partner with the Ethiopian Arts Forum to introduce to you the works of Ethiopian artists who now call the United States home.   We invite you to join us for an opening reception on Saturday, January 12, 2013 featuring live jazz by Ethiopian musicians and a talk about Ethiopian art and music by Professor Andugnaw Worku.

The exhibit includes the works of

·         Yisehak Fikre-Sellassie who obtained his Bachelor of Art degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in illustration, and also studied in Rome.  His art is exhibited all over the world and collected by major collectors in Europe and North America

·         Ezra Wube who moved to the United States in 1988 to receive his BFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Arts in Boston and an MFA from Hunter College in New York.

·         Solomon Asfaw studied at the University of Fine Arts and Design in Addis Ababa where he built a reputation as a talented artist in the art world of Ethiopia.  His artwork is heavily influenced by scenes and figures seen in the eastern regions of Ethiopia as well as the urban settings of the capitol city of Addis Ababa.

·         Tadesse Alemayehu began painting at an early age in Addis Ababa where he was raised.  His inspiration comes from nature, and the art he produces is intended to give him spiritual gratification.

·         Tesfa Besu Amlak was born in Asmara in 1956 and received an award as a high school student from former Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia for his outstanding piece of work.  He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1993 and has exhibited in Spain and Italy;

·         Yohannes Tesfaye received his BA from Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art and Design in 2001 and then worked on restoring an historic mural in the Addis Ababa Trinity Cathedral. Yohannes pursued further education in Russia and has exhibited in Germany, the Netherlands and Amsterdam before coming to the United States.

Yisehak Fikre-Sellassie is Visual art group coordinator for the Ethiopian Arts Forum.  He worked with Lush Life Gallery curator Marguerite Browne to bring you this exhibit.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.  Proceeds of all sales support the Ethiopian Arts Forum and the Jazz Heritage Center.
