Al-Jazeera Buys Current TV for $500 Million Dollars

Trying to solve their distribution issues with cold hard cash, Al-Jazeera, the Qatar-based international news network, has purchased Current TV and announced the launch of Al-Jazeera America. Time-Warner cable reacted by dropping Current TV from its cable channel line-up. While it's early to predict the impact of the full entry of Al-Jazeera into the US news market, Mediachannels Rory O'Connor sketched out the future landscape a bit.

Media Consolidation Uproar at the FCC

Tens of thousands of comments have been filed at the FCC (proceedings 1-235 and 9-182) objecting to the renewed attempt to slide through a significant relaxation in media ownership rules. You can still pop a comment in. Feel free to check out our comments for inspiration but a simple "stop, we don't want this" will do.

Free Speech vs the University

A Washington state case (Demers Vs. Austin) discusses the free speech rights of tenured faculty at universities and whether those rights stop at criticizing university governance and university administrators. Now at the appeals court level after the journalism professor lost the lower court case, a decision is expected shortly. The plaintiff discusses the filing of the case and what he thinks is at stake.

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
