Free Family Day | Connections, Origins and History

Join MoAD and the One Million Bones Project to take the Students Rebuild Challenge: Make a clay bone, a symbol of solidarity with victims and survivors in ongoing conflicts in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and the Sudan. Each bone that is created generates funds for CARE's work in the region. All the bones made at MoAD will be included in an installation that will blanket the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  [more]

Dr. George Barganier presents "LOVE, Black Men and the African Diaspora." His current work, Fanon's Children: The Military Defeat of the Black Panther Party and the Rise of the Crips and Bloods in Los Angeles is a historical analysis of political activism, state actions and economic conditions from 1964 to 1992 and subsequent effects on Black male consciousness in Los Angeles.  [more]

The Hiplife in Ghana with Halifu Osumare

The Hiplife in Ghana: West African Indigenization of Hip-Hop explores Accra, Ghana as a site of as a site of a whole new form of world music called hiplife. Dr. Halifu Osumare will present a brief slide presentation on Ghana and the history of hip-hop in that West African country, and then share excerpts from the book.  [more]

EDUCATOR WORKSHOP

Women of the African Diaspora

In this FREE workshop we will use comics to compare stories of women in different times and places. We will discuss ways students can develop visual storytelling skills to question how gender shapes the opportunities we have and the decisions we make. This workshop is designed for teachers of 6-12th grade, but any educator is welcome to participate.  [more]

The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, Where Art and History Intersect

Thru May 19, 2013

The collection offers an inspirational journey through five centuries of African American history, culture and heritage. Presented by Wells Fargo in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the exhibition features artifacts, rare books, manuscripts and visual art from the 18th to the 21st centuries and includes a copy of an early version of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as slave documents, books by Phyllis Wheatly and Benjamin Bannaker, correspondence by Zora Neale Hurston, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Alex Haley and fine art by Henry O. Tanner, Artis Lane, Richmond Barthe, Elizabeth Catlett, Samuel L. Dunson, Jr. , Lois Mailou Jones, Richard Mayhew, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and more. The touring exhibition is organized by The Bernard & Shirley Kinsey Foundation for Arts and Education and KBK Enterprise, Incorporated.  [more]

A Tribute to Belva Davis

Belva Davis has been a fixture in Bay Area journalism for more than five decades. Since becoming the first black female television journalist in the West in 1964, she has covered events of local, national, and international scope; interviewed US Presidents and other world leaders; and, for the past 19 years, served as the host of KQED's must-watch public affairs program "This Week in Northern California." Belva announced her retirement from broadcasting last year, and signed off the air on November 9. [more]

Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
