11th Oakland International Film Festival

(OIFF11)

Thank you for your support Oakland!

Film panel led by Darrien Gipson of SAG INDIE

On behalf of The Oakland Film Society, we would like to thank you for coming out this year to the 11th Oakland International Film Festival (OIFF11).

OIFF11 would not have been possible without the support of this years sponsors/partners and volunteers. To name a few: The East Bay Community Foundation, SAG-INDIE, The Oakland A's, The Oakland City Center Marriott Hotel, The Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau, The Oakland International Airport, The City of Oakland, The Oakland Asian Cultural, Block Report Radio, Wright Enterprises, LA Hitz Media, Support Oakland Artist, Liquid Nitro, Mo' Better Food, KPFA Radio, KBLX, Supreme Pictures, Water Buffalo Pictures, Center, The Grand Lake Theater, The New Parkway Theater, The San Leandro Performing Arts Center, The Black Repertory Theater, The Oakland Underground Film Festival, Expressions College, The Familyhood Connection Inc, The Air Lounge, Anfilo, Owl N' Wood, Faz Restaurant, ElevenFour productions, Commercial Image Design, William "Harp"  Harper Photographer, CANA, Kulture Freedom, OJU Image Collective.

HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights of OIFF11 consisted of fillmmakers who came into Oakland to attend their film screening and share their stories, mixed with filmmakers in Oakland telling theirs. This recipe produced an overall beautiful dish that consisted mainly of great films on various topics, networking events at some of the Bay Area's premiere locations, and screenings beyond the Oakland border (this year, we held screenings in Berkeley and San Leandro) in addition to screenings in Oakland.

The FILMS
We knew the film "LICKS" was going to draw an audience in OIFF11. The buzz was out. "LICKS" was made in Oakland and recently premiered at the SXSW film festival. Prior to the screening, we also received a few praises from folks who saw the trailer.  The screenings turned out to be more than standing room only. When the words "SOLD OUT" were placed on the window, many people became very upset and practically forced us to host another screening of "LICKS" that same evening! lol! You Got to Love Oakland! We did it!

The NETWORKING
On Saturday, April 6th, during the day, OIFF11, we hosted filmmakers panel on Grand Ave and Broadway Street in a district in Oakland called Uptown. We would like to thank all the filmmakers and film organizations for assisting us in pulling this together. To view the list of the film panelist click here. Special thanks to SAG-INDIE for sponsoring this years panel and their national Director, Darrien Gipson for attending and sharing her expertise in the independent filmmaking industry.

The PARTIES
To talk about the parties or after events could probably get us arrested for disturbing the peace. I'm not just saying this...lol.. Like I said earlier, You Got To Love Oakland! To illustrate, after the screening of "Funkquaria Rising" at the Grand Lake Theater ("Funkquaria Rising" film tells the story of samba funk a group of musicians/dancers/drummers) the Samba Funk troop grabbed their drums and other instruments and beat them down the street to the after party place CANA. For those of you who live in the area near the Grand Lake Theater and were awaken by loud drums one night-sorry...

The SCREENING VENUES
OIFF11 hosted screenings at The Grand Lake Theater, The Oakland Asian Cultural Center, The New Parkway, The Black Repertory Theater (located in Berkeley,CA) San Leandro Performing Arts Center (located in San Leandro, CA). Each of these venues possessed a unique characteristic that expanded the Oakland International Film Festival brand this year, while enabling us access to additional theaters to screen independent films.
