The Forum: Conversations at YBCA is pleased to welcome Anna Deavere Smith for a one-night-only event at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Popularly known for her many film and television roles (Nurse Jackie, The West Wing), Smith is a MacArthur Award-winning playwright and actor, having "created a new form of theater - a blend of theatrical art, social commentary, journalism, and intimate reverie." Her most recent work Let Me Down Easy deals with the subject of healthcare. It ran for six months at New York's Second Stage Theater, and then toured for nine months around the U.S.

Smith will be joined on stage by Steven Anthony Jones, the Artistic Director of San Francisco's Lorraine Hansberry Theatre.

Once again, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre will be one of
27 Black Theatre Companies across the U.S.A.
and Port Elizabeth, South Africa,
reading the same play, at the same time, on the same day.

A Scene from the original 1981 production of A Soldier's Play: (l to r) Brent Jennings, Steven Anthony Jones, Eugene Lee, Denzel Washington (Training Day, American Gangster), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained), James Pickens (Grey's Anatomy), & Peter Friedman.

This year's reading will be of A Soldier's Play by Charles Fuller.
Our Artistic Director, Steven Anthony Jones,
originated the role of Private James Wilkie
in the original production at New York's legendary
Negro Ensemble Company,
under the direction of company founder Douglas Turner Ward.

A black sergeant cries out in the night, "They still hate you," then is shot twice and falls dead. Set in 1944 at Fort Neal, a segregated army camp in Louisiana, Charles Fuller's forceful drama--which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982--tracks the investigation of this murder. A Soldier's Play is more than a detective story: it is a tough, incisive exploration of racial tensions and ambiguities among blacks and between blacks and whites that gives no easy answers and assigns no simple blame.
