No Meeting For You

Media Alliance was a bit shocked to discover Nancy Pelosi's SF office would not meet with us and other local reps of the Stop Watching Us coalition to discuss surveillance. Not in August, not in September. Not ever. In the meantime, a leaked NSA audit revealed 2,776 incidents of unauthorized snooping in a 12-month period. Read the audit.

If your response to all of this is "why should I care?" -  then here's a few reasons why you might.

Public Television on the Auction Block: KCSM-TV On A Platter

Filing public records requests regarding the liquidation of KCSM-TV is becoming an MA way of life. The latest document haul reveals, in the event planned dissolution by spectrum auction fails, the station's license could be forcibly sold to a Christian chain broadcaster, a right-wing talk outlet,  or anyone else Blackstone Group subsidiary Locuspoint Networks selects.

Global Media Watch: Ecuador

You probably heard jibes about Ecuador's media controls after the country was one of three to offer asylum to NSA-whistleblower Edward Snowden. But the snarky comments may be misguided. Ecuador's new communication laws are worth a look if you believe in democratizing the media.

Upcoming Classes  (a few more to come for fall/winter after dates are confirmed)

Spokesperson Training (starts November 13th)

MA Certification - Proofreading (starts January 11th)

MA Certification - Copyediting (starts February 1st)

Incarcerated Nation; FCC Caps Interstate Phone Rates

The national Campaign for Prison Phone Justice notched a big victory when the temporarily 3-person Federal Communications Commission voted 2-1 to cap interstate phone rates for calls out of prisons, providing some relief to prisoner families long victimized by high commission rates.

Hooray For The Slowdown

Sometimes no action is the best action. Fire Island, NY sure thinks so. A  fast-track request from Verizon to not fix phone lines destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and provide residents with only Voice Link wireless service got a slowdown at the FCC - after more than 1/2 of the island's permanent residents objected. Verizon may have to fix it.

Community Television; Where Is It?

This Democracy Now segment looks at channel guides and how many cable companies deliberately make community television channels as difficult to find as humanly possible. And what we can do about it.

Resources: Everything You Didn't Want To Know About ALEC

Normally, we try to feature free downloadable resources to help you in your work and activism. This substantial report from the Center for Media and Democracy may not lift your spirits, but it is eye-opening about the far-reaching impacts of ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council).
