Ask Sweis Family for Fairness in Marcus Bookstore Foreclosure
May 22, 2014

Dear Marcus Books Supporter,

On Tuesday, May 6th, the locks to Marcus Books were changed. However, the demand to keep the Marcus Bookstore/Jimbo’s Bop City building has not.

Since the eviction, there has been an outpouring of support and an unwavering desire to continue to reclaim the Marcus Books/Jimbo’s Bop City building – the symbol of the perseverance of the African American community and beyond and a beacon of a San Francisco that refuses to ignored or displaced.

But new owners, the Sweis, real estate speculators and proprietors of City Wide Cab and Royal Cab, don’t care. They are destroying the history and heritage of the African American community of San Francisco.

The Sweis have refused the Johnson’s access to the bookstore to pack their things. Within a week, because of all the public attention and large sign in the window declaring the eviction, the bookstore was broken into and items were stolen.

As of Wednesday, May 21, the Sweis, who have continued to refuse access to the Johnsons, began dumping and destroying the contents of the bookstore.

This will NOT be tolerated. Will you stand with us and DEMAND the Sweis respect our history?

We are asking everyone to call the Sweis and DEMAND they do the following:

Ask for Chris, Nishuan, or Suihala Sweis

City Wide Cab: (415) 920-0700

Royal Cab:  (415) 643-9500

  • Stop the destruction of the Marcus Bookstore Property NOW!
  • Let the Johnsons, the proprietors of the bookstore, to access the contents of Marcus Books and pack
  • Compensate the bookstore for what was stolen in the time the Sweis refused access to the bookstore and for anything that has been destroyed or dumped since the eviction
  • Sell the property BACK to the community through San Francisco Community Land Trust

The community – book lovers, activists, residents, teachers, faith leaders - will NOT tolerate this. It has become increasing obvious that the Sweis do not care about the role of this building, the value of the bookstore and the history of the property to the community, nor do they have basic respect for the Johnsons and the bookstore.

Join ACCE and the Campaign to Save the Marcus Books/Jimbo’s Bop City Property and help fight for Marcus Books, for our history, and for the very residents that are the soul of this city.
