San Francisco, CA - The Lorraine Hansberry Theatre successfully kicked off it's 2014 Season with packed houses for Barry "Shabaka" Henley's "Mingus Remixed," directed by Delroy Lindo. The production was well received and included: Muziki Roberson-piano/composer; Kash Killion-cello/bass; Howard Wiley-saxophones; Javier Santos-dancer/choreographer; David Allen Jr.-sound designer/composer; and Marianella deHaas Macchiarini-stage manager.

"Mingus, Remixed" VIP Reception Committee:John Burris Esq., Chairman;Nafeesa Ahmad-Bey; Stephanie Shoffner; Charles Ward; Cheryl Ward Honorary Committee: Danny Glover; Carl Lumbly; Pam Moore; Carey Perloff; Ishmael Reed; and Barbara Rodgers.
The ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) tie in comes due to the fact Charles Mingus died of ALS. Mingus' struggle with the disease is evident in Henley's "Mingus Remixed."
The Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, a non profit itself, used its platform at the Creativity Theater (formerly Zeum near the rechristened Leroy King Carousel) to give back to the community by hosting an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge between performances. After the Saturday matinee, Johnnie Burrell of International TV Media caught it on tape as Wright Enterprises' Jackie Wright, a former Lorraine Hanberry Theatre Board member took on the bucket of ice water. She was inspired by Pastor Bryan Carter of Dallas' Concord Baptist Church who challenged Rev. Dr. Frederick Haynes III of Friendship Baptist West, a close contender for the national NAACP presidency and native San Franciscan.
Wright challenged folks in media to take on the challenge. Response to date, Gerry Dove, dynamic promotions director at KBLX et al, "I'll do it if Nikki does it first," referencing Nikki Thomas of the KBLX Morning Show with Steve Harvey. "We wait with bated breath." By the way it's a good thing to hold your breath when a bucket of ice water is poured over you head. Word to the wise!

LHT's Gina Snow Pours Ice & Water on Jackie Wright, former LHT Board Member for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Posing minutes later in the aftermath, Wright says you too can survive the "chilled my body but warmed my soul" experience. She challenged folks in media and everyone to take the ALS challenge and help find a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease.

KBLX's Nikki Thomas Speaks With "Cops and Robbers" Jinho "The Piper Ferreira" of Flipsyde- Appealing for National Dialogue
From the back story of how "Cops and Robbers" got its stage birth via the direction of Ami Zins and Lew Levinson, Nikki Thomas of KBLX, does an excellent job of peeling back the dimensions of Jinho "The Piper" Ferreira as he talks about the creative angst he developed as a law enforcement officer working daily to be the change he wants to see. Piper talks about how his wife, educator, Dr. Dawn Williams Ferreira encouraged him to create change via "Cops and Robbers." He talks about the purpose of the play to create dialogue and change. Special thanks to Promotions Director Gerry Dove for arranging the interview. Listen here:
The "Cops and Robbers" project includes the play, the book "Cops and Robbers, Past ,Present and Future, the CD of the play, that has been submitted to the Grammy's and the Single "Believe" from the "Cops and Robbers" EP. This weekend's show at the Marsh in Berkeley is the last of the original run and is sold out.
"Cops and Robbers" written and performed by Jinho "The Piper" Ferreira gives an unvarnished look at violence in America, yet it calls for hope through personal responsibility and action, as seen in his Single "Believe."
