The Oakland Film Society is officially accepting submissions for The 14th  Oakland International Film Festival - April 5-9th, 2016. The Early Bird deadline is January 1st, 2016. Click here to submit your film.

For the past thirteen years, The Oakland International Film Festival (OIFF) has showcased independent films from filmmakers around the world including films "Made by Oakland" filmmakers.

Over the years, we have truly been honored to host filmmakers like Terri J. Vaughn, Shaka Henley, Anthony Lucero. Jonathan Singer -Vine, Carl Lumbly, Roger Guenvuer Smith, Kikua Kawasaki, Carlos Bolado, Roy Agyemang, during The Oakland International Film Festival, to name a few.

Many times, independent filmmakers tackle subjects mainstream media overlooks with an added passion to promote "the voice" of  the "voiceless." We believe independent filmmakers and the stories they tell, are effective tools to improve communication between communities

The same is true with the film "Straight Outta Compton."

It seems like yesterday since George Holliday videotaped from his balcony a man named Rodney King being beat up by four L.A. policemen on March 3rd, 1991. However, this type of abuse was already being put in rap lyrics from a rap group from the City of Compton (a part of Los Angeles)  who called themselves "NWA."

The film, "Straight Outta Compton" is based on the true story of the rap group NWA, as well as the conditions they had to overcome to become the Dr. Dre, Ice-Cube, we know today.

"Straight Outta Compton," opens April 14th at a theater near you.

We thank you for your continued support!

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country.  When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation.  Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job).  The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright.  Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.
