Goodwill Shines on Comcast's Upside
Goodwill CEO Maureen Sedonaen appeared on Comcast's Upside to talk about this year's New Year's Eve Donate-A-Thon, December 31, 2015. Special Thanks to Lorena Hernandez for getting producer Mark Baker and production team on site at Goodwill Headquarters, 1500 Mission Street in San Francisco. If you didn't see Upside Monday night on Comcast Hometown Network Channel 104 Here it is:
Remember Goodwill after Christmas. They have a special home for those ugly sweaters. At Goodwill there is no such thing as "an ugly sweater." One man's "ugly sweater" is another person's beautiful new opportunity.
Goodwill turns gently used clothing, furniture, electronics and more into opportunities like job training and jobs! Why not get your sorority, fraternity, church, or club friends to gather donations and bring them down to Goodwill on Thursday, December 31st beginning at 7 a.m. You'll be surprised whom you may find there. Last year former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. joined the party with a purpose and even belted out a verse or two of "Ride Sally Ride." Not promising the Mayor will be at the Party with a Purpose this year, but your being there will make the difference in the lives of neighbors who need a hand up, not a hand out. If your community group wants to join in the fun from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., contact Cynthia Harvey at 415-575-2141 and let her know you and your crew will be on hand to bring donations.
There's a special call for electronics... So as you upgrade, Remember Goodwill can turn your
old
phone, computer, tablet, CD player, etc. into newopportunities.
Here's a glimpse of some of the happening at last New Year's Eve Donate-A-Thon 2014 thanks to KTVU.

Nothing to Laugh About...
All the best to Sinbad.... He's given us so many laughs over the years, but its time for us to lift up a prayer for him as he recently underwent a 10 hour back fusion surgery. Here's a moment at Mac World at the Moscone...Go ahead laugh. "Laughter is medicine for the soul."

Speaking of Health.... San Francisco National Coalition of 100 Black Women has you covered. The chapter is not only helping people enroll for Covered CA, it is also using the project for Workforce Development. SF NCBW joined forces with I.T. Bookman Community Center to train a Senior to assist with the enrollment project and learn general administrative skills with a $5,000 grant from Supervisor John Avalos' OMI Community Action Grant via the OMI Community Collaborative. Once again, Dr. Maxine Hickman, maximizing opportunities for the betterment of community.

Year End Giving... First, Make Sure You're in the Black...
As you clean out your closet for Goodwill's Donate-A-Thon, don't forget about year-end giving. Think about organizations that have been making a difference for years like The Oakland International Film Festival, The Lorraine Hansberry Theatre,African American Shakespeare Company, Berkeley Black Repertory Group, San Francisco Black Film Festival, Afro Solo Festival, I.T. Bookman Community Center,Booker T. Washington Community Center, African American Arts and Culture Complex, Bayview Opera House, Ella Hill Hutch Community Center and others. Support the grassroots organizations that are making change at the ground level. Even support the organizations with your interest in mind that you may possibly think "is not ready for prime time." Your input: time, talent and treasure can make them "ready for prime time." If you don't who will? If not now, when?
Check out Black media to see what you may be missing otherwise. There's more than one side to any story....And there are many positive stories that just don't make mainstream media. The work of Johnnie Burrell's International Media TV and Jacquie Taliaferro's LaHitz Media is testament to that fact. To get half the story or no story means you are grossly misinformed. Your vote and your money is not making the impact that it can when you don't have "the rest of the story," as journalist Paul Harvey used to say. "Good Day!"
