Dr. Amos Brown, President San Francisco Branch NAACP; Chairman, Social Justice Commission, National Baptist Convention, USA; and Pastor, Third Baptist Church of San Francisco
"San Francisco wasn't supposed to be Ferguson, but here we are. Distrust for police in the city of St. Francis has reached a high we didn't think possible. A San Francisco police officer's gun does not fire in our city without sparking instant public outrage. Protesters clutching signs hit the streets even before circumstances of the shootings are clear. And while SFPD's defenders can call such protests premature, there is a more important truth they fail to recognize. Without a thorough audit of the department's practices, we have no way of knowing what reforms are needed, if any. And that has created a vicious cycle for the San Francisco Police Officers Association, which while defending its brothers in blue has failed miserably at seeing how its reluctance to reform is making its officers - not just our community members -- less safe."

Attorney Jacq Wilson speaks of seeking solutions concerning hate crimes, 4/8/16. |
|
The work of San Francisco attorney Jacq Wilson in the Modesto and Fresno area of California, underlines the need for young lawyers to be inspired by "Thurgood" and others. As in the case of San Francisco Superior Court Judge Teri L. Jackson being inspired at the age of 5 to become a lawyer after seeing the film "To Kill A Mockingbird (SPEECH AT THE 100 BLACK WOMEN GOLDEN GIRLS HATS & GLOVES TEA VIDEOTAPED BY JOHNNIE BURRELL)," "Thurgood" at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre reaffirms the need for stout hearts like Thurgood Marshall considering our increasing headlines exposing hate crimes and social injustice. From San Francisco to Ferguson to Fresno and Modesto and beyond, "Thurgood" inspires us not to accept the turning back of the clock as headlines portend.
