On Sunday, October 2, 2016, a panel was convened at Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland, California to talk about the importance of Black voices in media. The spotlight regarding the conversation was on a nationally praised Black newspaper, the San Francisco Bay View. Panelists were Cuisine Noir Magazine's publisher, Sheree Williams,Terri Collins, a key figure in the founding of nationally recognized radio station KPOO, a voice for the young, journalist

Cierra Bailey, and philanthropist and moderator, Phyllis Bowie. All agreed that the San Francisco Bay View is under fire now and ways must be found and implemented to keep its voice heard. Tune in! sfbayview.com;kpoo.com; joycegordongallery.com; kevinwoodson.com; cuisinenoirmag.com.

In 2012, Wright Enterprises noted the importance of the San Francisco Bayview Newspaper with an "Our Media Matters" Theater Night at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, 410 Post Street, where the San Francisco Theater is now housed. The event was co-sponsored by LaHitz Media. W.E. joins with Johnnie Burrell in pointing our the importance of the newspaper and encourages people to subscribe to the newspaper and for writers, young and old to submit their community stories to the San Francisco Bayview. 100 Year Old Iris Canada Fights On

Iris Canada has been living in her Page Street Apartment in San Francisco for over 50 years. Her last court date gave her a stay of 7 days before Sheriff Deputies come to walk her out of her home. The last day of her last stay was Tuesday, October 4th. Her namesake, Iris Merriouns continues to support her aunt in her efforts to have her desire to live out her days in the only home she has known for over 50 years.

How did it come to all of this? How did the Life Covenant that she paid for investing over $100,000 so far to age in place fail her? Her niece and the supporters of Iris Canada say it's greed and the desire of the owners to turn the apartments in the building to condos, condo conversion.

One of the latest articles about Iris Canada gives her a glimpse in her life since her emergency hospitalization after getting the court order eviction:

How did it come to all of this? Appeals to City departments, including the police department that was called to investigate elder abuse by the owners and residents of her building, seem to be caught up in a paper chase that is robbing Iris Canada of time and options.

In addition to looking for relief from the courts and battling the lawsuit brought against her aunt by the building owner, Iris Merriouns has written the San Francisco Police Department, the District Attorney's Office, the Department of Aging and Adult Services and others for over a year, yet Ms. Canada has found no relief from the City's bureaus. Harassment Case;Eviction Urgent; City says "Case is closed."

Ms. Canada is a week beyond the stay she received from the court. Look for updates to see how the "City that Can" can do for Iris Canada.

"This year, consumers can visit CoveredCA.com to explore their options for coverage in 2017," said Peter V. Lee, executive director of Covered California. "Most of those renewing with us get subsidies that mean they are paying only a portion of the premium. But even without considering the subsidy, nearly 80 percent of our consumers will either be able to pay less than they are paying now for health insurance, or see their rates go up by no more than 5 percent if they shop and switch to another plan."
