LONDON BREED'S SOCIAL JUSTICE RUN FOR MAYOR

NOTE FROM W.E. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT WRITER/EDITOR
Jackie Wright

The unfair treatment of "Interim Mayor" London Breed propels Jackie Wright from political sidelines of just voting to engage all out support of London Breed for Mayor. Breed "was done wrong" and needs to be righted. Enola Maxwell, Espanola Jackson, Willie B. Kennedy, Cleopatra Vaughn, Vera Clanton, Bernice Brown, Ave Montague, Dr. C. Diane Howell, Ruth Dewson, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Mary Mcleod Betune and a host of others would agree...And I know my Momma Nora SHOWNUFF would add her "Amen!"
As much as I have always loved politics all my life, politics in San Francisco is something I've always stood back from since my move here in 1990, because of it's vitriolic nature.  There has never seemed to be the balance of "may the best man win."  Never room for growth or ebbing and flowing of ideas and positions, Politics in San Francisco has always seemed to be very cast in iron, our way or the highway on very strident sides, whatever the issue may be.

Vitriolic you say? The last sheriff's race was cringe-worthy just to name one.   The outing of San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos' extramarital relationship to take him out as a possible Mayoral candidate is another example.  And in the wider historic backdrop, Dianne Feinstein's rise to Mayor of San Francisco and ultimately U.S. Senator after the deaths of Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk and Jackie Speier's political rise after the death of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan and the Jonestown Mass Murders demonstrate how bitter and deadly politics in this beautiful city can be.   So among the gleaming alabaster buildings of San Francisco, my concerns about politics have deep roots in reality.

I put aside those concerns after what happened to Interim Mayor London Breed.  I saw it coming from day one with all the media emphasis of "Interim Mayor" in all the reports I read and heard.  I could see the handwriting on the wall.  The forces were positioning to oust Breed before you could begin.  I began searching for old articles that referenced Diane Feinstein as "Interim Mayor" after the sudden death of Mayor Moscone as I never remember seeing that term in any of the write ups I had seen.  That political action of stripping the first Black woman of even a few months as Mayor, represents the underlying true nature of San Francisco and so with that during Women's History Month I am publicly supporting the accomplished and qualified London Breed.  "Right is Right and Right Don't Wrong Nobody!" I hear you from heaven, Momma Nora!  My father, Sp5 Wyley Wright Jr.'s grandmother, Nora Henderson drilled "Right is Right and Right Don't Wrong Nobody" into me every summer I visited her in the historic Floradale District off Avenue B in Jacksonville, Florida, after Dad's death in Vietnam, March 9, 1964.

Anyone anywhere in the world, who has a sliver of concern for fairness and social justice should support Breed and San Franciscans should vote for her.  A wrong needs to be righted here in San Francisco.  There needs to be an antithesis to what is sitting in the White House now...not more of the same...For a man to declare that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue in New York and nothing would happen to him, to be elevated to the highest office in the land, why do we wonder about all the violence unfolding all around us when violence has been signaled and anointed from the top with a wink and a nod.

America, "You Reap What You Sow."  "The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted," Psalm 12:8 (last word!)

KUNENE FOUNDATION BEYOND WORDS...

As Mrs. Mathabo Kunene continues the work of her late husband, former UCLA Professor and President Nelson Mandela's First Poet Laureate, Mazisi Kunene, preserving the Zulu language in literature, she works at home to not only impact literature but lives as well as seen by the photo of the Math and Science Center built by the Kunene Foundation in rural South Africa.  She works abroad. Mrs. Kunene will be feted as posted by Jennifer White at the "Toast of South Africa" honoring the legacy of Black Bruins in the anti-apartheid struggle.  Mrs. Kunene will be a special guest of the  UCLA Black Bruins on Sunday, March 18th, two days before theSouth African Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal Mission Meeting in Los Angeles.  You may recall, as the above story chronicles, Mrs. Kunene visited San Francisco in January 2017 and made a strong plea for what was declared at the inaugural Essence Durban Festival; "We want you!  We need You to help us build!"  A special appeal & call for "Black Industrialists"was made by the Durban-based festival organizers and Mrs. Kunene in her January 2017 visit at the San Francisco Foundation and Felton Institute, but ALL people of goodwill are welcome to do business in and with South Africa.   All People of Goodwill Are Welcome!  The door is open!
