CHAMPION AWARD
In her time as a California state legislator and now as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives,Congresswoman Jackie Speier has been a fierce and courageous advocate for gender justice. This year alone, she has introduced legislation to prevent and respond to sexual harassment in Congress, provide for the retention and service of transgender members of the Armed Forces, codify Title IX protections for sexual assault survivors, and end gender-based pricing discrimination. A former Board member of the Women's Foundation of California, Congresswoman Speier has a long history and commitment to advancing gender justice.

TRAILBLAZER AWARD
In March 2018, Senator Toni Atkins became the first woman and the first member of the LGBTQ community to be elected as President pro Tempore of the California Senate. In 2017, she led groundbreaking efforts on behalf of transgender people by authoring SB 179, which created a third gender marker on state-issued identification documents for non-binary and intersex people, and the Women’s Policy Institute-sponsored bill SB 310, which eased the process by which incarcerated transgender people can request a legal name and gender marker change. In 2013, she authored AB 154, a historic bill that expanded reproductive rights in California by allowing advanced practice clinicians to perform first trimester abortions.

VISIONARY AWARD
We Said Enough, the brave and bold campaign to end sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, and abuse began in October 2017 when Adama Iwu wrote the first #MeToo open letter focused on sexual harassment in the public policy sector and co-founded a nonprofit withSamantha Corbin, Alicia Lewis, Christine Pelosi, andPaula Treat. Featured in the December 2017 issue of Time that named the Silence Breakers “Person of the Year,” We Said Enough has shed light upon the abuse endured by women working in California state politics over the last several decades. This campaign, which began with an op-ed signed by dozens of women leaders and published in the LA Times, has spurred multiple pieces of state and federal legislation and the development of a patented app designed as a “report and support” mechanism to empower survivors and heal communities.

CINDY MARANO LEADERSHIP AWARD
One of the most accomplished and powerful community leaders of our time, Mily Treviño-Sauceda (WPI-State ’04) is the co-founder of Líderes Campesinas, a statewide grassroots organization of women farmworkers in California, and Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, a national alliance of more than 15 organizations led by women farmworkers. Throughout her career, Treviño-Sauceda has worked tirelessly to end sexual violence and abuse against campesinas by developing her community’s leadership in the areas of education and outreach, research and media, and policy advocacy. |
