Millennial presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg and Mother Jones’ editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery join INFORUM to talk about his upcoming historic campaign as an openly gay man, the important role youth will play in the election, and more!
At 37 years old, Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg already has a few firsts under his belt. In 2011 and at the age of 29, he was elected mayor of South Bend, IN, making him the youngest mayor of a U.S. city with at least 100,000 residents, and the first openly gay municipal executive in Indiana. In December 2018, he announced his 2020 campaign for the presidency and is now the first millennial and the first openly gay presidential candidate. With fellow politicians like President Barack Obama touting him as the future of the Democratic Party, Buttigieg is seemingly in for an incredible year.
Join INFORUM for a conversation with the presidential hopeful, moderated by Mother Jones Editor-in-Chief Clara Jeffery, as they discuss Buttigieg’s quickly rising star, the importance of representation in American politics, and his desire to be the “fresh start” he feels our country needs.
ABOUT PETE BUTTIGIEG: Pete Buttigieg is in his eighth and final year as Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Buttigieg was first elected mayor in 2011 at only 29 years old, and re-elected in 2015 with 80 percent of the vote. Buttigieg served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and took an unpaid seven months leave during his mayoral term for a deployment to Afghanistan. For his counterterrorism work, he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal. In 2017, he ran for Democratic National Committee chair, earning national praise for his clear message and emphasis on rebuilding the Democratic Party from the ground up in every community. He currently serves as the chair of the “Automation and the Impacts on America’s Cities” task force at the United States Conference of Mayors. A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and graduate of Harvard, he lives with his husband Chasten in the same South Bend neighborhood where he grew up, with their two rescue dogs, Truman and Buddy.
ABOUT CLARA JEFFERY: Clara Jeffery is editor-in-chief of Mother Jones magazine. She has been editor-in-chief since 2015. Prior to that, she was co-editor with Monika Beuerlein since 2006. Mother Jones has flourished under her leadership. During her tenure, Mother Jones has added bureaus in Washington and New York, increased the staff, grown the print circulation to greater than 215,000, and built it into a 24-7 multimedia newsgathering organization, and earned a national reputation for investigative pieces. Jeffery started her career as an intern for the Chicago Reporter, reported and edited for the Washington City Paper, and was a senior editor at Harper’s Magazine for six years. She attended Carleton College as well as Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
