As San Francisco diligently responds to the COVID-19 pandemic, our State elected officials offer their support in the form of a wide range of legislative initiatives. This week's Online Briefing for Faith Leaders, hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council and supported by the COVID Command Center's Joint Information Center Virtual Outreach Team, welcomes Senator Scott Wiener and Assemblymembers David Chiu and Phil Ting, who will shine a light on those legislative initiatives and respond to questions submitted in advance by the CEOs of San Francisco's most prominent faith-based social service agencies.

Senator Scott Wiener
Senator Scott Wiener represents San Francisco and northern San Mateo County in the California State Senate. Elected in 2016, Senator Wiener focuses extensively on housing, transportation, civil rights, criminal justice reform, clean energy, and alleviating poverty. He chairs the Senate Housing Committee and is Vice Chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus. He is the immediate past Chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus. Before his election to the Senate, Senator Wiener served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing the district previously represented by Harvey Milk. He also chaired the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. Before taking public office, Senator W
iener practiced law for fifteen years, including nearly a decade as a Deputy City Attorney in the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. He also served in a number of community leadership roles, including co-chair of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center and on the national Board of Directors of the Human Rights Campaign. Senator Wiener has lived in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood since 1997. He received degrees from Duke University and Harvard Law School and was a Fulbright Scholar in Santiago, Chile.
Assemblymember David Chiu
David Chiu is a California State Assemblymember representing the 17th Assembly District, which encompasses the eastern half of San Francisco. Asm. Chiu was first elected to the Assembly in November 2014 and is the current Chair of the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development and Chair of the API Legislative Caucus. He previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 2009 to 2014, representing the northeast neighborhoods of District 3, and was the first Board President to hold that post for three consecutive terms. Prior to running for public office, Asm. Chiu was a criminal prosecutor, civil rights attorney, and the founder of a small business, as well as a hands on community leader who chaired the boards of a neighborhood association and an affordable housing non-profit. Chiu is a congregant at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.
Assemblymember Phil Ting

Phil Ting was elected to the State Assembly in 2012, representing the 19th Assembly District, which spans the Westside of San Francisco, as well as the communities of Broadmoor, Colma, Daly City, and South San Francisco. As California navigates new challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ting is focused on economic recovery, while also continuing with progressive policies that protect and expand opportunity for all, equal rights, and environmental preservation. Because of his experience in the financial sector and as the San Francisco Assessor-Recorder, Ting has become a leading voice on California’s finances. He now serves as Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee after having served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation. Ting is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He began his career in public service as the Executive Director of the Asian Law Caucus, an organization founded in 1972 to advance and promote the legal and civil rights of the Asian Pacific Islander community, and once served as Community Relations Director at San Francisco State University. In 2005, Ting was appointed Assessor-Recorder of San Francisco by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, where he closed a five-year assessment backlog and brought in $290 million in unpaid property taxes to the city, created a program to increase rooftop solar installations, and spearheaded efforts to assist homeowners and tenants facing foreclosure. Ting lives in San Francisco’s Sunset District with his wife, Susan, and their two children.
This particular briefing will depart from the established format. In lieu of a panel discussion our featured presenters will respond to questions submitted in advance by the CEOs of San Francisco's most prominent faith-based social service agencies.
