Committees Seeking Volunteers

Greetings Everyone !

We hope you had a delightful summer and are ready to get back to the work of the SCI Africa Region.  We have a number of regional activities that we will be sharing with you shortly, during our Annual SCI Africa Region update that will be held in October.

Many of you have asked how you can become involved in the planning of the SCI Africa Cape Town Conference that will be held in Cape Town, South Africa 
February 20-24. 2023.

We have included the listing of committees that we would like you to participate in. A brief description has been given and the first meeting of some of the committees will begin taking place in October. If this is something you would like to be involved with, please complete the Volunteer Survey no later than Thursday September 30, 2021.

Please read about the following committees:


Program
This Committee will serve in leading the design and implementation of the the programmatic theme, speakers, panels, workshops and all other components for the Conference activities on Thursday and Friday February 23 & 24, 2023.

Fundraising/Sponsorships
This Committee will lead and coordinate all fundraising and sponsorship efforts to support the activities of the conference beyond the support of registration and vendor fees.

Events
This Committee will work with the Program Committee to vet and coordinate food & catering vendors, with attention to various multiple diet restrictions and menu themes that explores both the variety of foods available in South Africa and the African Continent.
-Welcome Event- Miami & Cape Town Theme?
-Day 1-  Lunch-CPT City Hall (South African Food Theme)
-Day 1-  Evening Event at Winery
-Day 2-  Lunch-South African Braai
-Day 2-  Closing Event-Celebrate Africa!

Marketing & Outreach
This committee will develop the marketing strategy and products that will achieve the minimum number of participants to attend. The marketing outreach will have three components:
-US (Sister Cities Network & Partners)
-Continental Africa
-South Africa
 
 ACSUS/Wits University-Universities & Cities One Day Symposium
This Committee will be supporting the efforts of SCI Africa with the coordination of the one-day symposium that will be held at Wits University, Johannesburg under its Africa Center for the Study of the US.  This event is targeted for academics and practitioners who are interested in addressing the roles of sister cities working with universities and colleges to strengthen their sister cities relationships.
 
Volunteer & Hospitality Support
This Committee will serve as the lead in coordinating all on-site (Cape Town) volunteer activities, pre and during the conference including airport arrival, Hotel and City Hall Welcome Centers, utilizing both local and international volunteers to conduct various activities pre, during and post conference activities. This Committee will also serve as the lead committee for the optional SCI Africa Mandela Day of Giving that conference participants can participate in to engage with local nonprofits in Cape Town & the Western Cape.

Protocol
This committee will serve as the Coordinator and for all engagement for both US, South Africa and international dignitaries and VIPS. All formal correspondences will be filtered through the committee as well as the committee will work with the dignitaries and VIPS staff to determine the requirements.

Partnerships
This Committee will serve as the coordinator for all internal and external partnerships that will enhance and support the operations. These partnerships will be sourced from the US, South Africa and Continental Africa.
 
 
Please note Operations, Budget and Finance Committees are subject to participation by SCI.

Breed joined State Senator Scott Wiener to announce legislation to combat fencing, the sale of stolen goods on City streets. Authored by Senator Wiener and sponsored by Mayor Breed, Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) would allow San Francisco to create permitting requirements to regulate the sale of items commonly obtained through retail theft and impose criminal penalties for those who engage in this practice.
