MAYOR LONDON BREED ON

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY

San Francisco, CA — Mayor London N. Breed today issued the following statement regarding Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

“Today we honor the life and powerful legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recommit ourselves to his fight for equality and change. We must continue working together to move this country forward and uphold the values of justice, equal rights, and service that he embodied.

When I think of Dr. King and his words ‘true peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice,’ I know that there are still so many barriers to equality, to equity, and to justice that we must continue to break. Our City and Country have experienced adversities that have challenged us to speak up and take action. But from those challenges, comes the opportunity for change. An opportunity for which he long fought to achieve.

As the first Black woman Mayor of San Francisco, I know that it is his shoulders and the shoulders of other extraordinary Black leaders who fought for justice that I stand on. When Dr. King marched and put his life on the line to make a difference, he changed the narrative. Change that led to equal opportunities for African Americans and other minorities in this country.

While we remember Dr. King’s work, we should also reflect on what we as San Franciscans have done to be a part of making sure today is not just about celebrating him, but about putting his words into actions to make a difference in the lives of the people of San Francisco. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. left behind a legacy that reminds us to recommit ourselves to the dreams he fought so hard to make a reality.”
