The Progressive Baptist Missionary Educational District Association (PBMEDA), Women’s Auxiliary, is gearing up to host our annual Special Effort Community fundraiser event (Café for the Soul) on June 29, 2013. The funds raised through the efforts of this event will go towards the goal of donating close to $5,000 to meet the financial needs of women shelters designed to assist battered, homeless women and children. In order for this event to be an effective success, the Women of PBMEDA are petitioning help from local base businesses who also are committed to the progression of the community it serves. SAN FRANCISCO, CA---On July 11, from 6-9 p.m. the San Francisco Appreciation Society (SFAS) will honor artist Eugene E. White for 50 years of painting and community service with an exhibit, artist talk and reception at The African American Arts & Culture Complex (AAACC). Mr. White’s work, alongside the paintings of Edythe Boone, photography of Armand Wright, and pieces from the collection of the African American Historical Society is part of the AAACC’s Elders Project 2013, celebrating the creativity, strength, perseverance and beauty of older African Americans.

Marcus Bookstore, the oldest black owned bookstore in the United States of America--Fighting Foreclosure ! "Marcus Books has hosted thousands of authors including Rosa Parks, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Patti Labelle, and B.B. King. The storefront used to be Jimbo’s Bop City, a jazz club that hosted musical greats and is largely responsible for Fillmore Street being named the “Harlem of the West.” This place is more than a bookstore. Jackie Wright of Wright Enterprises, joins with the San Francisco Community in the mourning of the passing of Vera Lee Clanton. A stalwart community leader who served the community well into her nineties. She was an active fellow member of the San Francisco Chapter of 100 Black Women. Ms. Clanton established The Berry and Vera Lee Clanton Endowment Scholarship" at San Francisco State University. Her delightful smile and friendly personality will be greatly missed.
